Nancy Werlin dicusses Impossible

So fellow freaks. I was honored with the opportunity to talk to one of my new favorite authors via e-mail, Nancy Werlin! She agreed to let me ask her a couple of questions about Impossible, and I am happy to share them with you!

1. Your book is different from any other story I've read. Was it just the song that inspired you, or was it something else?

The song was the core of my inspiration for IMPOSSIBLE, for sure. The lyrics to Scarborough Fair haunted me for years. I talk about that on my website, here:

http://nancywerlin.com/impossible.htm#gpm1_3

But I was also inspired by romantic fiction, which I love, and by thinking about "bad boys" in romantic fiction and how compelling they are. I found myself reacting negatively to that, maybe because I've known one too many bad boys in real life. They really don't make good partners. So I wondered if I could manage to write a "good boy" hero, and if I could write a story in which the suspense doesn't come from wondering if the lovers will ever get together, but instead comes from them working together as a team to defeat evil. Those ideas got entwined for me with the Scarborough Fair song and its haunting lyrics about true love, and the implication between the lines that the woman had failed the man in some mysterious way ... and my idea that he now hated her. What is true love? That's the core question.

2. Zach falls very quickly for Lucinda, is that part of the spell or was it just honest to goodness true love?

It's true love, absolutely. And it's not so sudden, when you think about it. He's known her for 17 years. They were friends -- important friends to each other. They knew each other's histories and families. Zach is the one person outside her family that Lucy trusts with her complicated feelings about her birth mother. And Lucy is someone who can tell Zach off when he ought to be told off -- and he knows it, too. (I love the scene where she tells him he's not being the friend she needs, and if he can't, he should get out of her life for good.)

3. The elvin knight sounds very handsome. Was there anyone in particular you pictured him as, or was it just someone of your imagination?

I pictured not an individual person that I know, but a type: "black Irish." These are those yummy Irish men with the black hair and the startling eyes. Patrick Dempsey. The young Pierce Brosnan. That type.

4. Throughout the book it is said that there are many versions of the Elfin Knight or Scarborough Fair. Where did you get yours at?

I made mine up, basing it on the many variants that are available (and working with Franny Billingsley, a friend and fellow writer, who has a more musical ear than I do, so she made sure the lyrics could actually be sung). You can read several other versions here:

http://www.springthyme.co.uk/ballads/balladtexts/02_ElfinKnight.html

5. Lucinda must fulfill three impossible tasks throughout the book. You, as the writer, had to help Lucinda on this journey. Was it difficult to discover a way to break the curse?

It was incredibly difficult to figure out how to do it. In fact, in my first draft, I only found a solution for task #1. But I learned the same lesson Lucy learns: ask your friends for help. In the acknowledgments for IMPOSSIBLE, I mention who helped me with what task.

6. For many authors music keeps them going through the rough process of writing. Was it the same for you or did you have a different type of escape?

Some authors have entire playlists for a book, but not me. When music inspires me, it's been a single song on repeat. So for IMPOSSIBLE, I kept hearing Scarborough Fair in my head, over and over and over. Now, for my next book, EXTRAORDINARY, which will be published in September, and which is about love, faeries, and girls' friendship, the single song is "For Good" from the WICKED soundtrack. Here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5WNeBZ4rBU&feature=related

7. It is very hard to come across a great, unique book. It must be even harder to write one. Any tips?

Hah! When you're writing, definitely do not think "I need to write a great, unique book." That kind of high expectation will kill you. Instead, think: "Today I just need to write a couple of pages that move forward."

The other truth that a writer needs to understand is that what is a "great, unique book" for one reader is probably not going to please a different reader as much, or even at all. You can't write a book that absolutely everybody loves. All you can do is write the book you want to write, and do it as well as you can. If you try to please everybody, you will create a weak mess that pleases nobody.

Check out Nancy Werlin's newest book Extraordinary, to be released September 7th, 2010. I will personally be the first in line at Borders.

Twilight: The Graphic Novel

Twilight: The Graphic Novel by Stephenie Meyer

For a Graphic novel, I give this Five Stars. The graphics are just beautiful. The characters are so closely drawn the way that Stephenie Meyer describes them. This is only volume one, so it goes through the meadow scene and stops. I was okay with this because that means more volumes to come and they will display nicely on my bookshelf. I am hoping each book will be two volumes, but not sure about Breaking Dawn, it should probably be 3-4 volumes! So to sum it up, pics are awesome, characters are great, key quotes are all in the novel. So I highly recommend it to all Twilight Saga fans AND Graphic novel fans! --Gina

Impossible - Nancy Werlin

Impossible by Nancy Werling

"Lucy is seventeen when she discovers that the women of her family have been cursed through the generations, forced to attempt three seemingly impossible tasks or to fall into madness upon their child's birth. But Lucy is the first girl who won't be alone as she tackles the list. She has her fiercely protective foster parents beside her. And she has Zach, whose strength amazes her more each day. Do they have enough love and resolve to overcome an age-old evil?"
Info from http://www.nancywerlin.com/impossible.htm

Okay, so this book was beyond amazing. It wasn't the same as Twilight or the Mortal Instruments, but something about it made it so close to a five that I had to give out my first 4.75! This book was like nothing I've ever read before and it is definitely worth the read. There is only a hint of magic and fantasy and packed with my favorite thing: romance. If you don't own Impossible, you're crazy and you need to run out to your local Borders and get it right now!

4. New Segment: Author Spotlight -Angie- Claudia Gray

Claudia Gray is the author of the week. She is best know for her Evernight series which includes, Evernight, of course, Stargazer, Hourglass, and coming in March of 2011, Afterlife. Claudia Gray is not her real name. She didn't choose a pseudonym because her real name is unpleasant (it isn't), because she'd always dreamed of calling herself this (she hasn't) or even because she is hiding from the remnants of that international diamond-smuggling cartel she smashed in 2003 (Interpol has taken care of them). In short, she took a pseudonym for no real reason whatsoever. She says sometimes this is actually the best reason to do things. Her real name is Amy Vincent.

She lives in New York City. So far, in life, she has been a disc jockey, a lawyer, a journalist and an extremely bad waitress, just to name a few. She especially likes to spend time traveling, hiking, reading and listening to music. More than anything else, she enjoys writing.
Her lifelong interests in old houses, classic movies, vintage style, and history all played a part in creating the world of Evernight. STOP TO SAVE!

But now, let's look toward the future -- specifically, future tour dates. "Whenever I make a post about touring, people want to know why I'm coming to one place and not another. I think the image is of me lounging around in a gold-sequined caftan, receiving a shoulder massage from the French cabana boy and stroking my pet ocelot with the jeweled collar, and going, "AHAHAHAHAHAA, I despise Ohio, so I shall not tour there! I spit on Ohio! Work the lower back, Jean-Claude." Except for the ocelot, this picture has nothing to do with reality. Basically, I mostly go where the publishers think it would be good for me to go, and I trust their judgment. I am setting up a few dates on my own, too, but right now, the publisher-chosen places alone keep me pretty busy -- as you are about to see"

Then, just to prove that I do not spit on Ohio:

:Cinna of course, does a wonderful job on Katniss's outfit for the opening ceremonies. I thought to myself, how will he pull off another jawdropping theme, but this time he makes her look like burning coal. "Katniss, the girl on fire, has left behind her flickering flames and bejeweled gowns and soft candlelight flocks. She is as deadly as fire itself." pg 207 Did this send a message to the Capitol? To the Districts?
:Duhduhduhdun! Finnick makes his first appearance. We all know Alex is happy. I thought it was funny that his first line, besides hello, is "want a sugar cube?" :You are introduced to a girl named Johanna, who is a known killing machine, she gets naked in the elevator to their floor because she hated her costume. Peeta is grinning when johanna gets on her floor, and Katniss of course gets a little angry. Peeta tells her everyone is picking on her because she is pure.
:They step off the elevator only to run into Effie and Haymitch, who is looking sick and angry. Effie tells them they have a matched set of Avoxs'. There is the girl from the original Hunger Games she was in, and finally, the man who helped her save Gale. Darius is her new Avox.

Angie - Chapter 16 Me thinks Angie is becoming the PAUSE Queen? Chapter name: Making friends

They watch the Opening ceremonies and Katniss talks about how pitiful the aging victors are. Most look grotesque in their costumes. And of course the crowd goes wild when they see Peta and her. They are the image of what tributes should be, (not Grandparents) As soon as the ceremonies premiere r over Katniss ges to bed. Someone knocks on her door, but she ignores it. In the morning Katniss doesn't want to go down to breakfast. She orders food and eats in her room waiting til time to go to the training center. Haymitch pounds on her door demanding she get down to the dinning room NOW. When she makes it down he tells the her she has two jobs; First her and Peeta stay in love, second is to make some friends. She doesn't want to, doesn't trust them. STOP TO SAVE!He explains that her and Peeta r at a disadvantage this time going in. Their competitors know each other and have for years. So obviously they would target them first. (wonder what the gamemakers would give the person who took out Katniss) Katniss asks Haymitch, "You want us in the Career pack" He tells her that has been their strategy, but she doesn't want the "Careers" and he tells her everyone is a VICTOR in these games, they can make their own pack. Find someone who might be of some use to them. Do u think Haymitch is working them toward an uprising? Does he know more the he has let on about it? PAUSE HERE FORE RESPONSESTOP TO SAVE!
So they go to the Training Center Katniss talks with the District 3 tributes, Wiress and Beetee. Hinting around about the uprising to see if she can find out anything. Wiress points out the force field between them and the gamemakers wondering what brought it on. Katniss explains that it was prob her, refering to when she shot the arrow through the apple last year.
They go to lunch and Katniss tells Peeta she likes the District 3 victors. He says they r something of a joke to the others...Nuts and Volts.......Katniss tells Peeta she wants them as allies. Peeta says he is leaning toward Chaff and Seeder. Katniss says she is okay with Seeder, but not Chaff yet. Katniss tries to be more sociable and talks with some of the other victors. When Katniss realizes Mags volunteered for the same reason she did she decides she wants her on her side. STOP TO SAVE!
Katniss goes to the archery station...................at dinner Haymitch tells them all the victors mentors r telling them to request her as an ally. Over the next few days she spends more time getting to know them and the more she gets to know them the worse it is for her. She doesn't hate them, but in order for Peeta to stay alive, they have to die. PAUSE HERE FOR COMMENTSSTOP TO SAVE!
Final day with private sessions comes and neither of them knows what they r going to do...............Peeta goes first and its 40 min before they call Katniss in. She makes a noose, drags a dummy to the middle of the room, puts the noose around its neck, she bloodred berry juice and writes on the dummy's skin....steps away to watch the gamemakers faces as they read what she wrote..............Seneca Crane....da da daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! New Twilight Book

New Twilight Book folks!
Don't believe us? Go check it out on Stephenie's webpage! Stephenie states that it was never supposed to be a novel, but just a part of the Official Guide. Luckily for us, Stephenie over-does everything and it ended up around 200 pages! So her publishers agreed to making it a stand alone novel.
BUT IT GETS BETTER!
Not only will we finally be seeing a little more from Stephenie, the book will be FREE as an E-book. Stephenie said, "here was one thing I asked for: since this story had always been an extra for me, and was meant to be released with the Guide, I wanted to be able to offer it to my fans for free. You all have bought a ton of my books, and I wanted to give you this story as a gift. My publisher was awesome and embraced this idea. We still wanted to also produce a physical book with a cool cover (see below) that you can add to your set if you like, but starting at noon on June 7th until July 5th, it will also be available online at www.breetanner.com."

So, you will be able to get it for free or purchase a hard copy as well. What do you guys think?

Thirteen Reaons Why: Jay Asher

Thirteen Reasons Why: Jay Asher

"Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker--his classmate and crush--who committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out how he made the list. Through Hannah and Clay's dual narratives, debut author Jay Asher weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect "
Information from thirteenreasonswhy.com

So, basically this book kicked butt. Although, it isn't for everyone. People under fourteen should not read this book unless they are mature enough to handle it. Suicide is a very serious issue, and this book makes it sound very dramatic and possibly even worth while if you could ruin the lives of someone who ruined yours.

It only took me a few days to read this book. Even though I didn't go crazy over it like I would have for Twilight or something like that, I still was curious to know what was going on; why Clay was on the tapes, what sent Hannah over the edge. I found myself in tears at several points in this book and angry through the other parts. Bullying was never a big issue in my school, at least not with me, and I used to laugh at shows that had serious bullies on it, because I thought they were a thing of the past.

I definitely recommend this book.

Deadly Little Secret by Laurie Faria Stolarz

Deadly Little Secret: Laurie Stolarz

"Until three months ago, everything about sixteen-year-old Camelia's life had been fairly ordinary: decent grades; an okay relationship with her parents; and a pretty cool part-time job at an art studio downtown. But when Ben, the mysterious new guy, starts junior year at her high school, Camelia's life becomes far from ordinary.

Rumored to be somehow responsible for his ex-girlfriend's accidental death, Ben is immediately ostracized by everyone on campus. Except for Camelia. She's reluctant to believe he's trouble, even when her friends try to convince her otherwise. Instead she's inexplicably drawn to Ben...and to his touch. But soon, Camelia is receiving eerie phone calls and strange packages with threatening notes. Ben insists she is in danger, and that he can help – but can he be trusted? She knows he's hiding something...but he's not the only one with a secret."
Information from: LaurieStolarz.com

So, I really really enjoyed this book! The way the book is made is wonderful, and I wish all books were bound with the same paper and size. I felt so cool running around and reading it, in my STAT class I pulled an old time trick and shoved it inside my math book to make it look like that is what I was reading.

The plot begins very similarly to Twilight. She is rescued by a mysterious boy from a car out of control. Then the boy comes into her life and is confusing the heck out of her. THEN it gets really good as it takes such a unique turn. If you believe that the mind is capable of more than just thinking, than this book has no fantasy in it, and it was kind of refreshing. Werewolves and vampires are getting out of hand. Obviously this book has romance, or it wouldn't be a true young adult book.

Basically, this book is worth the read. Although, I can't imagine where they're going with the sequel. Happy Reading!

Looking for New Books

Hey freaks! Jessica here. I just spent the last twenty minutes staring at my bookshelf, wondering what to read. I picked up a book and thought "aha! That's the one!" I smelled it, and then another book on my shelf caught my eye. So I would put down the book that just moments ago was 'the one' and sniff a new book, wondering if it is the one I've been waiting for. Finally, after doing this with every single book I own and have not read, I called my fiance up to make the final decision. He said, "I don't know anything about these books." And I said, "I know, and your ignorance on them makes you the perfect person to make an unbiased decision on what I should read." This got me to thinking, since this is the general routine for me after I finish a book and am ready to grab another, how do you freaks decide what to read when EVERYTHING looks so good? Any particular techniques? Is it as difficult for you as it is for me? Go to our facebook to let me know. The link is in the contact us section at the bottom of every page. It is in the discussion tab of the facebook page. :)

HAPPY READING!

The Forest of Hands and Teeth Video Review

The Forest of Hands and Teeth: Carrie Ryan

The best way to describe this book is, hauntingly beautiful! It is romantic, dark, suspenseful, sad, exciting, scary, heart-wrenching. There are not enough adjectives to describe this book. I read it over 2 weeks ago, and it is still in my head! I love the characters. Mary , oh Mary, my heart just broke for her and her story. Because the writing is so beautiful you really feel like u are on the journey with her. The author does not take pages and pages to describe things, but in one sentence says so much. Every line is important. The book also takes off from the beginning. Once I started this book I couldnt put it down. I felt like this is something that could happen in our world today. Especially after watching "I am Legend" lol I have passed it to 2 people so far who have thanked me over and over because they love it too! Carrie is a very talented writer and this is such a different story. It shocks you , yet leaves you calm and wanting more. You feel what these characters feel. My suggestion, if you have not read this book, put everything else down and read it!
FIVE STARS!
