I was surprised that I didn't fall in love with this book, because several people seem to really like this series. I think what it was, is that I am not really a vampire book kind of fan. I loved "Twilight" but I only read it because I said a book club interview with Stephenie Meyer on Border's website when Eclipse was coming out. I bought "Twilight" and it sat on my bedside table for a month probably and then I got bored one day and gave it a try and than became obsessed as most did! But it was more for the love story and Edward and his gentlemen ways.

This book is the typical "bad" vampire book. The humans are the good people. It has a little romance in it but not much.

I will say, it was an okay book and I would like to at some point listen to book two because I did towards the end start caring about the characters. Atleast enough to give the next part of the story a chance. I could see where maybe it will get better.

I listened to this on audio. I wasn't crazy about how the person read the inflections of what people were saying. I think maybe if I had chose this one to read, maybe I would have liked it a little bit more, but I still think the story would be a 3 for me.

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-56677779021629286502012-02-13T18:26:00.001-05:002012-02-13T18:26:59.760-05:00Goliath by Scott Westerfeld

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Excellent! Don't let this series pass you by. It does not get the attention it deserves. Scott Westerfeld does a brilliant job telling this story. I listened to the audio and it is one of the best audios out there. The voices and accents are amazing! It is as good as Harry Potter audios by Jim Dale.

A MUST READ! :)

I also own the books because there are brilliant drawings throughout the story and the books look very smart sitting on my book shelf!

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-85017758553481711032012-02-05T08:40:00.000-05:002012-02-05T08:41:08.182-05:00The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I gave this book a 3, but I need to think about it a little while before writting an actual review. I didn't love this book like many others seem to. I never really felt connected to the characters and I felt like the last half of the book was drug out a little too much. I also didn't really like that there was never any explanation as to why Noah and Mara could do what they could do? I realize answers might come on book two. But, this seems like the kind of book where they will learn to control their powers but it is going to be pushed off to being "gifted" with special powers for the better of the universe and I really don't like this sort of thing. I prefer real reasons....but thats just me. Also, I didn't really buy into the GREAT love between them, it just didn't seem real esp. not in a Edward / Bella kinda way that I love. The author never really explained about Noahs past loves??? and reputation?? Was it real or just rumors?

Another question: Did Mara cause the lady at the end to shoot the guy or was she about to but the woman stepped up and did it first???

Okay, so I said I wasn't going to review it but there it is. I didn't hate or dislike this book and I will probably some day read book two when it comes out, but I won't be in line at midnight or in any hurry to rush and read it. It was okay. The story could've been better for me. I think this book got a lot of attention and I expected too much maybe?

Just my opinion....glad others are loving it.

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-83368965457714461162012-02-05T08:39:00.001-05:002012-02-05T08:39:43.543-05:00Black Bird, Vol. 1 by Kanoko Sakurakouji

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I've had this book for a while and hadn't got to it. The story was interesting and getting to know a few new characters was great. I love "Ronnie"! His story was awesome.

This is a series I recommend. The main character Jessica can get a little annoying as far as the author focuses a little too much on her thinking the same thoughts ALOT... She thinks the same thoughts over and over. It is understandable with what she is going through, I just don't think I needed to read it so much.

But over all I loved the story and Lucius is right up there with Edward (not quite, LOL - but close!) I would put them in the same category. :)

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-45143702762734246262012-01-29T17:56:00.000-05:002012-01-29T17:57:11.195-05:00Behemoth by Scott Westerfeld

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This series does not get enough attention! It starts out with Meghan being a prisoner of the Winter Faery Queen and deserted by the Winter Prince, Ash, who she thought loved her. Meghan thought the Iron Fey were defeated but when they steal the scepter from the Winter Court she realizes that the battle isn't finished. With Ashes help they both escape. Their journey to find the scepter takes them through the faery and human world. Once on their journey the action intensifies and Meghan gets help from some surprising characters. The romance between Ash and Meghan develops more in this book and leads to a cliff-hanger ending that left me wanting to read the next book.

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-67360444541829133032012-01-04T17:24:00.000-05:002012-01-04T17:25:08.611-05:00Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was awesome! The searchers want to form an alliance with the Guardians, but Calla isn't sure she can trust them. But what they are offering would give her a chance to destroy her former masters and save her pack and maybe Ren. Saving Shay is what got her to the Searchers. What would her life be like if she could make her own choices? Not have to take orders from the Keepers any longer? This book has lots of action and surprises. It is a page-turner. I can't wait for Bloodrose. It is unlike any story I have ever read. It is a steampunk novel. It is an exciting adventure. I listened to the audio, which I would actually recommend! This is my first experience reading a Scott Westerfeld book and he does an unbelievable job of making two very different characters from two very different upbringings and worlds. The characters are both so lovable in their own way and the audio voice amplified that even more. There are many little funny parts where the two characters are interacting and are so different. Alec is so sweet and innocent and really sees the world in black and white and I just love him so much that I want to reach through the book and give him a big bear hug! Deryn who is pretending to be a boy so that she can be in the royal army is so daring and ballsy and she says exactly what is on her mind that I just wanted to jump through the book and be her BFF!

I am sooooo glad I found this book and I can't wait until I get my hands book two!

I think all ages would enjoy this book. If you enjoy fast paced adventure, steampunk, humor, mystery and suspense, and history check this book out!

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-10160761016284238352011-12-07T17:01:00.001-05:002011-12-07T17:01:29.578-05:00Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Hmmm.........What do I say about this book???
I liked it at times
I wanted it to be over at times
I giggled at times
One word to sum up this book to me would be, silliness! Not that that is a bad thing but the word silly is what first pops into my mind when thinking of this book.

I love the cover, in fact it is what drew up to the book.

I do think that if I actually read this book, I would've quit on it and not made it through. But, I listened to the audio which was entertaining. Libba Bray herself does the audio, she does all the voices and she is fantastic at them!

My favorite character was Miss Texas, but she is missing for the better half of the last part.

It wasn't what I expected. This is a great story idea and I wish it would've been on a more serious note. So it wasn't that the writing was bad, it just isn't my style. I would have rather it have been a little more "real" instead of so out there. It has "commercial breaks" and even though they were ridiculous and made up products, I HATE commercials, so I didn't like that part of the book at all.

I gave this book a 3, because I liked it okay. It wasn't so bad, that I was thinking I wasted my time, but it wasn't a book that I will talk a lot about and/or recommend.

Shocking thing is, I read the "Gemma Doyle" series and I can't believe that those books were written by the same author. It is night and day, like maybe she took drugs while writing this book! lol

Final thought: If you want and/or really enjoy goofy, silly "out-there" kind of stories with no real meat to them, this would be for you. But otherwise, you will probably not enjoy it.

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-79214956612629494892011-12-07T16:44:00.001-05:002011-12-07T16:44:09.117-05:00The Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

WOW! This was another great book by Julie Kagawa. It is so awesome that the author had not intended to write this originally but decided to largely due to us Team Ash fans! Very cool...

This book has lots of adventure, action, drama, hope, love, romance, funny bits. Your heart will break and rejoice at different periods of this book.

This "Iron Fey" series is a world that I love to be in and I love being with the characters. I wanted to know how the book would end but didn't want the book to end. LOL For me, there are a handful or less of books that even on those slower times in the book or when the characters are in some "downtime", I don't mind because I just love to be with the characters and surrounded by their world. This is one of those books.

Without giving spoilers, this is Ash's journey. You get to be with Ash the WHOLE book which is amazing! It is from his perspective. But there is plenty of Puck time and my favorite cat, Grimalkin. I am always so sad when Grimalkin disappears, but it is funny because it is always when dangers is coming. He reminds me so much of the cat on Alice in wonderland and I just want to give him a hug, which he would probably hate! lol

Overall, 5 star book.......5 star series! A MUST READ :)

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-64327748329305415362011-11-21T10:46:00.000-05:002011-11-21T10:47:03.923-05:00The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide by Stephenie Meyer

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I went ahead and rated this guide even though I have not read it entirely through. It is packed with info and someday I hope to read it all, but the "new" stuff is mainly about the history of the Volturi and all the Vampires that the Cullens meet through the book series. I am not really interested in their story right now for some reason. There are some extras, like little side stories that are really good, but I had already read them on Stephanie's website. I was hoping there would be more of that type thing.

BUT, I give the book a 5 because it is a big beautiful colorful book. It has many pictures throughout the book, showing you what the characters really should look like. If you have the Twilight graphic novels than you have seen the gorgeous Edward of course. But it has Renessmee who is just adorable! A really cool thing is it shows what the wedding dress that Stephanie described for Bella really looks like. The really awesome thing to see is that the Breaking Dawn, part 1 movie had that very dress, it designed very close to S.Meyer's vision.

A really great part of the book for me, other than staring at how flawless and beautiful Edward is (lol) is that the playlists that Stephanie did for each book is listed and even better, she can read the quote or the part of the book that she was writing while listening to that song. I really love her playlists and they do fit with her books so well. I wish the movies would've used her songs that she picked for the series, that would have rocked!

So, I recommend this to ALL Twilight addicts! Enjoy :)

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-70515303332069453432011-11-17T11:36:00.001-05:002011-11-17T11:36:41.131-05:00Nightshade by Andrea Cremer

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book would be a 3.5 if I could give a half point! lol

This book was really wierd for me...I LOVE the cover of the book and Angie loves this series, so I finally listened to the audio. I was really enjoying it up until about half way through the book and then I just kinda lost interest. I am not sure what it was. I am thinking it has something to do with I don't really like the main character and her choices, (in actions, and in love interest).

Also though, the writing seemed a little "over the top" at times. I am not sure whether this is the way the audio voice read it and made it seems too dramatic or if it was the writing, but I am gearing towards it was the writing. The author uses lots of adjectives to describe things and it just seemed too gushy sometimes to me.

I did really like the pacing of the book though. I hate when a book has a character questioning the whole book and then the last few chapters fill you in with answers. This book did not do that, the author filled you in at a really good pace and left some things unanswered for book two.

This was a story and a world that I really just wanted to know how it was going to end and get out of.

I think overall, this got a 3 and it is not going to be a favorite series of mine, it mostly because I do not like books about wolves and even though they call themselves guardians, they are wolves.

I should do a vid on our "yafictionfreaks" youtube channel that explains why I don't like wolves! lol

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-46400928566401498012011-11-17T11:05:00.000-05:002011-11-17T11:06:11.114-05:00Savor by Megan Duncan

This cover is soooo cool! This is my second Meg Cabot book. There is a book two "Being Nikki" and a book three "Runaway" that I am really looking forward to reading. I am finding that I really like Meg Cabot's stories! I always that her books were really girly chick-lit but I was so wrong. the covers to her books, although I do like them, are misleading as to what the book is really focused on. This one has mystery , suspense and a whole fantasy type element to it that I really enjoyed.

I plan to read plenty more of her books. I can't really say very much at all about this book without giving spoilers, so just trust me and go read it! lol

I have never read this kind of story, so it is fresh, new and interesting.

On to book two! :)

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-44199500345352947142011-11-07T14:41:00.000-05:002011-11-07T14:42:04.872-05:00The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Hmmmm.........this book was really hard to rate. The writing was very descriptive and beautiful. The magic and fantasy were very dream-like and vivid to picture in your mind. I enjoyed the first half of the book, but then it got very confusing. I couldn't keep up with who was who and I don't know that I fully grasped the whole concept of this book.

It just seemed "over my head" in the second half of the book. Things happen that I didn't understand and I don't know that the author gave answers for things that happened.

I listened to the audio which was a delight to listen to because it is performed by Jim Dale, who also performed all the Harry Potter audios. He does a fantastic job at really bringing the characters personalities into the audio.

I am not sure I would have continued with this book if I had been reading it, because I was so confused, but I stuck with Jim Dale. LOL

So again, writing was great, story was confusing. It almost seemed to me like the author had this great story and didn't really know how to end it? I also felt as if the story was so "fantasical" that I couldn't completely grasp it?

I am glad that I got through it. I wonder if anyone else had my experience? Not sure whether to recommend? I told my sister about it, but then went back and told her to read at her own risk, because I had gotten so confused. Maybe she will read it and explain it to me....lol

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-90915834566528076492011-11-03T14:39:00.001-04:002011-11-03T14:39:45.163-04:00The Dead and the Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Great book. This book drew me in from the first few pages. I have not picked any of her books up, because I always thought that her books were "chick-lit" which is not one of my favorite genre's. I do love the "Princess Diaries" stories but have only watched the movies.

Now, I am wanting to read EVERYTHING that Meg (yes, we are on a first name basis, lol, (not really)has written because I enjoyed this book so much. She says that what sparked the idea for this story was her fascination of Persephone and Hades. I also have always liked their story/myth. So knowing that and seeing this book cover I just couldn't resist reading this book. I had picked it up several times, either in book stores or looked at it on my Kindle or Amazon online. The cover always drew me in. I finally saw it at the library and decided to check it out (literally, lol) and I told myself.......I said , "Self....just read a few pages and see if u like it, if not take it back to the library." and I answered myself and said "Okay! I will do it."

So......I read the first page, the second , the third.........then the first chapter, the second, the third..........and then I just couldn't stop. I had to know what in the heck would happen to Pierce and how the underworld would effect her.

I have read on reviews that some people say it had slow parts. WHAT????? I just don't get that. Because I work a full time job and have a family to take care of, it usually takes me a while to read any book unless I am in love with it and even then sometimes it will take a while. BUT, this book, I started on Friday and was finished by Monday! I even took it to an amusement park on Sunday and read every time I was waiting on someone to get on or off a ride.

Also, I have read that some people think it is confusing. I kinda do get that. Because there are things that the reader doesn't understand in the beginning and of course the underworld is a new concept. But the author guides you along and you continue to find out what is happening throughout the book.

I will say the only negative (little bit) that I will say, is that it took me a little while, maybe a quarter of the book to half, to settle into Meg Cabot's writing style. Again, I havent read anything else of hers YET! But, she tends to write long sentences with thoughts popped into the middle of them. You get used to it, but sometimes I had to go back and read the original start of the sentence.

I was so happy to know that this is going to be a series and book two "Underworld" will be out summer of 2012! yay :) Meanwhile, I am reading "Airhead" by Meg Cabot (On chapter 5 and liking so far) and I just received "Insatiable" (her adult series) on my Kindle from the library. She has written so many books, I will be plenty busy until "underworld" gets here. I think I am going to read the whole "Princess Diaries" series too!

Love MEG CABOT! Go GET THIS BOOK! You won't regret it :)

Oh, and very clean.......this book can be read by younger teens, older teens, and anyone young at heart :)

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-89704034156333809472011-08-11T11:29:00.000-04:002011-08-11T11:30:22.472-04:00Re-read "City of Ashes"City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I just finished re-reading this book. I am really enjoying going back through the story, there are so many "clues" to the ending plot that I get to catch this time around. Cassandra Clare is one of my favorite writers. Her characters have very distinct personalities. They are witty, charming and mostly loveable! Jace is just the ultimate GOOD bad boy, Simon is the witty best friend/vampire and then u have Magnus Bane whom I am so delighted, excited and over-joyed to get to know! I think I could read 10 books strickly focused on Magnus and it would not be enough!

On the subject of re-reading. I strongly encourage you to do this! I never was someone who would rewatch a movie OR reread a book, but Twilight made me do this, LOL. Because when u are going into "Edward" withdraws, what else can a girl do, right? So while rereading Twilight, I realized how much I had either forgotten or foreshadowing that you totally get now that you know the whole story. Also, I tend to "rush" the read, flipping pages as quickly as I can to find out what will happen. The second time around you can really sit back and enjoy the read. If your characters are in peril, it still is upsetting and heart-wrenching (SPOILER ALERT for MORTAL INSTRUMENTS series........)like suffering through thinking that or not knowing whether Jace and Clary are REALLY sister and Brother! UGH! (Let's just get it out there, that I REFUSED to believe that this was the case, and even if it WAS the case, I DIDNT care! LOL) I wanted them together regardless, horrible isnt it? hahaha So to wrap things up, please reread your favorite books.

Idea: Add a Re-read shelf to your goodreads account and keep up with your rereads. So far, I have reread, Twilight, Harry Potter, and the first two books of The Mortal Instruments, and now am rereading Ally Carter's Heist Society!

Have fun and Happy Re-reading :) --Gina

Just realized I hadn't done a review on book one.

This was a great introductory book to the high-profile family of thieves that is Kat's family. I enjoyed this book. It is somewhat Nancy Drewish/Disney movie, but in a very good way! I actually was never a Nancy Drew kinda girl, but this book is written with such wit and adventure, I was drawn into the world and did not want to leave. These characters become your friends, just as Ally "Gallagher Girls" do.

Ally made me love mystery even though I thought I didnt. It's mystery, for people who arent really fans of mystery. The book is so fun and the story is so intriguing that when I got to the end, I thought that was actually a mystery-type book and wait a minute, I don't livke mysteries! lol but then on second thought, I guess now I do or atleast Ally Carter's mysteries, I do! lol I have always enjoyed suspense and Ally puts just enough suspense in there to keep you wanted to turn the pages quickly!

I recommend picking up this series. Book two is 5 stars! The story gets better and better, can't wait for book three.

Also, pick up "Gallagher Girls" series.

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-44109009179655486942011-07-05T09:48:00.000-04:002011-07-05T09:49:02.978-04:00Uncommon Criminals by Ally Carter

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

WOW! I LOVED this book. I read it in about 2 days! I enjoyed the first story, but this second one really stepped it up a notch and it actually made me rethink the first book. I have changed my rating for the second book from 3 to 4 stars. This book def. gets 5 stars. It kept me wanting , no NEEDING to read through till the end. It has so many twists and turns. Its a very exciting read. Its action, adventure, travel (makes u want to travel the world), little romance (could use a little more of this, LOL. Ally Carter's writing is different, I can't really explain it, but it always seems as if you are right there among the characters and you are at their side diving into the action just as they are. The main character Kat is someone I would love to have as a BFF or a cousin "if u read the book , u will know why I say cousin." Once I started reading book two, I was so happy to be back in the characters lives.

Without giving spoilers, Kat comes from a high-profile crime family. Even though she would like to have a "normal" life, her life is anything but. Oh, and of course, there is a sexy billionaire in the picture! lol Just found out on Ally's site that Drew Barrymore will produce and direct the upcoming film and I am soooooo excited. Ally Carter books always remind me of Disney movies, like Even Stevens, Lizzie McGuire or Parent-trap. I guess thats why I love them, they bring me back to good memories of being curled up with the family on the couch watching a movie.

This book is VERY clean, no bad language, no sexual content, no blood or gore which is proves you do not need all of that to have a great exciting story.

I highly recommend this series along with Ally's Gallagher Girls series. I never thought I would enjoy entering the thief or spy world, but now I find I don't want to leave it! Cant wait for the next one! Thanks Ally!

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-20634688911936381882011-05-23T12:43:00.001-04:002011-05-23T12:43:55.512-04:00The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was AWESOME! It was so nice to be in The Iron Fey world once again. I could not help but to fall in love with these characters from the beginning of the series. This book drives you a little batty becuz of how it ends, but I was very happy to find out there is a fourth one coming from Ash's perspective and journey. This series and esp. this book has such a Alice in Wonderland feel to it. Grimalkin was a creative master piece of a character. I found myself missing him when he would disappear just as Meagan did! Meagan has quite a ride in this story, its exciting, adventurous thrill ride from page 1 to the very end. I have been telling everyone that I can about this book series. I can only hope and dream that it some day becomes a film. It would be a block buster for sure! If you have not devoured this series and you love YA fantasy , romance, adventure, fey, and action , grab it as soon as u can!

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341172373708068851.post-57456185079445615482011-05-09T13:58:00.001-04:002011-05-09T13:58:24.785-04:00Fallout by Ellen Hopkins

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It was so nice to get book three to Kristen's story. This book was from 3 different perspectives, which sometimes can be confusing. It always takes me awhile to learn each character but thats okay, I enjoy the way these books are written. If you have never read or picked up a Ellen Hopkins book, I highly recomend doing so. They are written in poetry form. You might have a page that is shaped in a letter S and then the next page maybe a question mark, it is really cool and makes reading very enjoyable.

This series to me, is for 16 and up. They delve into some hardcore issues, but are written very well. This series is focused on a girl who gets addicted to crystal meth and how it effects her life and her choices and all the people around her. It is loosely based on the authors own experience with her daughter. I recently found out that her and her daughter are working on a memoir called, "Monster". Kristen calls meth, "monster". But the book is on hold due to Kristina going under treatment for lung cancer. It is so sad, becuz after reading these books I have come to care for Kristina and there is understanding how a person can make a few wrong choices and thats all it takes to go down a path that u really have to struggle to get off of. This book shows you and really makes you think about how it could happen to anyone, not just the people who are the typical sterotype.

I am looking forward to any of Ellen's future books and hope Kristina is doing well.

If you are new to Ellen Hopkins , I say start with "Impulse" (thats my fav) or this series, which is; "Crank", "Glass" and now "Fallout". U must read the Crank series in order or you will be confused.

View all my reviewsYA Fiction Freakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02055216907527746608noreply@blogger.com0
